Knitted amigurumi owl using HiyaHiya Sharp Sock Needles

Knitted Amigurumi

Yes! KnittedĀ amigurumi is a real thing!

Just because you don’t crochet, doesn’t mean you can’t create amazing amigurumi! So grab your sticks – we’re going to make something great.

Getting started with knitted amigurumi

Crocheted amigurumi in the round usually starts with a magic ring. There’s no exact equivalent in knitting, but you do have some options. You can use Judy’s Magic Cast On, just like for toe-up socks, or you can cast on a few stitches and join in the round. Alternatively, you can work flat then seam your work.

The pattern you’re using should advise the best way to get started.

The best knitted amigurumi for beginners I’ve ever seen is this pattern. You just knit a square, and sew it up cleverly – that’s it!

TipsĀ for knitting amigurumi

Want to turn out perfect knitted amigurumi toys and softies? Here are my top tips.

Pick the right yarn

The best yarn for knitted amigurumi depends on the pattern, what you have available, and your budget. Remember – there’s no such thing as bad yarn, only ill-suited projects! Think about who the amigurumi is intended for – is it likely to be handled a lot and need washing, for example – and what colours and texture you need. Once you have decided that, picking the right yarn will be easy!

Pick an achievable pattern

It’s great to learn new techniques and challenge yourself! However, it’s best to limit yourself to learning one or two new techniques per project, not half a dozen at once. Pick a pattern within – or only slightly beyond – your skill level. Be honest with yourself for the best results.

Pay attention to finishing

How you place the face, and how you stuff your creation makes a huge difference to the finish product! Hide your ends carefully, place the face even more carefully, and you’ll get a better finish product. Often, the finishing can take as long as the creation – and that’s not a bad thing. It shows that you’re creating with care.

Let’s knit a gansey

Let’s knit a gansey

Gansey, guernsey, jersey. What on earth am I talking about? A sweater, of course. You know the sort I’m talking about. A deliciously cabled, blue sweater, perfect for cold days. You might call it an aran sweater, or a jumper. You almost certainly do not call it a ‘knit frock’ like old books do. Whatever […]

70+ gifts for knitters and crocheters

It shouldn’t be hard to find gifts for knitters and crocheters, right? After all, you can always buy them yarn, right? Wrong. Knitters and crocheters love yarn by definition, but they’re also fussy about it. Not just colour, but merino vs alpaca vs silk and worsted weight or worsted spun, and don’t get me started […]

Lining a hat: the warmest winter beanie!

Lining a hat: the warmest winter beanie!

Why bother lining a hat? After all, any knitted hat is probably plenty warm, right? Usually, but not always. Jesse requested a new winter beanie, one which was really warm, please. I thought I’d make him a colourwork hat, as the yarn which floats behind the pattern effectively adds another layer of warmth. (Looking for […]
