A giant granny square work in progress

A Giant Granny Square – WIP Wednesday

lace weight yarn for a giant granny squareI’ve had this beautiful ball of lace weight yarn for a couple of years now. I’m turning it into a giant granny square.

I’m using a 3.5mm hook, and a slightly looser than average granny pattern – two chains between clusters, three chains at each corner. That gives it a really loose, open look. Lacier than your average granny square, which tend to be on the thick side.

To make a giant granny square, just make a granny square… bigger. There’s no special technique. Just keep increasing at the corners on every row, for as long as you can stand it.

I’m thinking it will turn into something similar to a granny square shrug. It would be nice to have something light to throw on over summer dresses. And this may be light and lacy, but the yarn is merino (merino/silk? merino/something? I don’t remember) so it will be warm even if it is very holey.

But I’m not too wedded to the finished object. This is process, rather than product work. If it doesn’t turn out – so what? I figure I may as well have stash in granny square form, as in a ball.

A giant granny square is a great stash-busting project, and a great travel one too. This comes with me to knit night each week (now that the rows are looooong, I need something to distract me!). It went with me to Prague recently, and I’ve got a couple of conferences coming up – you bet it will be stashed in my bag for those too.

I’m almost at the stage where I can block it, tie the edges closed and try it on as a granny square shrug. And I still have about half the yarn remaining! I’ll keep you updated with this one – if it works out, I think it will be lovely!

Knitting a Welcome Blanket

Knitting a Welcome Blanket

Knitting a Welcome Blanket is art, politics… and a lot of fun. If you’re reading this in 2017, then you’ve heard of Trump’s proposed boarder wall with Mexico. It’s almost 2,000 miles long. What if many crafters around the world, knitted and crocheted blankets from 2,000 miles of yarn? And these blankets were displayed in […]

Knit Princess Charlotte’s Sheep Cardigan (Here’s the Pattern!)

I’m not a royal watcher, but I get the appeal. Those royals! They’re like a real life BBC drama (I will watch a good BBC drama about the royals. I get it. I do). So when I saw this pop up on my Facebook feed, I knew I had to share it. Little Princess Charlotte, […]

Home Made Sock Blockers

Home Made Sock Blockers

Yep, I block my socks! Not every time I wear them, but when they’re fresh off the needles. Before now, I’ve just patted them out onto a towel, but now I’ve made myself a couple of pairs of home made sock blockers. I’ve spent a bit of time drooling over beautiful sock blockers on Etsy […]
